Combining coloured tiles

Combining coloured tiles

When it comes to choosing tiles for your home, there are lots of options – and one trend that’s taken off this year is that of the coloured tile. Whether you like bright and bold or are more of a pastel person, there’s a coloured tile to suit every taste.

You can add colour by creating a feature alcove by the bath.

So, if you want to get a bit more daring in your bathroom or kitchen, would like to add a pop of colour, or simply want to incorporate a little variation into your interior design, there are lots of ways to do this.

At Tileshack, we have a great range of tiles in all shapes, sizes and colours which are sure to inspire you. We’ve subsequently shared some of our top tips below on how to combine coloured tiles to create a visually appealing space – and selected a few of our favourite tiles to give you some ideas of what’s available.

Top tips for choosing colourful tiles

If you’re planning to incorporate coloured tiles into your home, then there are a few things to consider before you make your selection.

  • Theme: Knowing what mood you want to create is key as a starting-off point, as this will obviously influence what colours you go for. So, decide whether you want a darker, ‘Gothcore’ style or something light and airy. Do you want a fun, colourful space that’s bold and bright, or something more muted?
  • Size and shape of the tiles: What size and type of tile you choose will also feed into the colour choice, as this will affect the impact of it and the overall vibe. The shape of the tiles will also contribute to the look you want – whether that’s modern with quirky hexagonal or circular tiles, or a more traditional style with square tiles. The grout you use will further influence the end result, so this is another thing to consider at the outset.
  • Tile finish: Whether you select a glossy or matt finish for your tiles will also impact upon the effects of your chosen colour palette within the room. A high-gloss tile will help to diffuse light more easily across the tiles and give that contemporary polished look, while matt tiling has more of a natural vibe and will help to create a more rustic look.
  • Consider accent colours: While you need to decide on the main colour palette, being able to pick out accent tones to complement the overall theme will add interest and texture to your room.

How many colours should you choose?

The answer here is not to get too carried away with your selection – two or three different tones is probably best, so you don’t end up with a busy bathroom that’s a bit too multicolour.

Also, it’s usually a good idea to keep your bathroom within the range of the general colour scheme in the rest of your house. It might look a bit strange to walk into a bathroom which is full of bright primary colours if the rest of your home is decked out in neutrals. That being said – the choice is ultimately yours as to how much of a cohesive home you want.

Create a statement with contrasting colours

Blues and whites are popular colour choices for bathrooms and are, of course, contrasting colours, so you could go down this route and create a cool, calming space. Natural, earthy colours like blues and greens are ideal if you want to introduce a more relaxing vibe, while these look great paired with the contrasting timber tones of wood-effect tiles, or those with a stone-inspired style.

For example, the Nebraska Marron Wood-effect Tile in Brown Ceramic has a natural woodgrain design and will work well combined with wall tiles in colours such as white, grey, blue, green or pink.

The pale green of the Pool Green Brick-effect Wall Tile also works well with a woody tone, the gloss finish giving it a modern vibe.

Alternatively, you might want to go the other way and combine brighter colours, taking two much bolder colours and mixing them together. This can also add depth to your room by creating feature areas.

Complementary colours

Choosing colours which are similar in tone is another way to combine coloured tiles – for instance using two natural wood tones or layering darker shades to create a cosy look. This will also create texture and add visual appeal to your room.

Tiles can further be used on the floor and continued up the wall – or incorporated into part of the wall design and used alongside a different style within the same colour palette. For example, the brown Africa Hex Matt Porcelain Pattern Tile pictured below is combined with the Norai White Matt Body Wall Tile which has a similar aesthetic. It perfectly complements the brown hues of the Africa Hex tile, which is also used on the wall to add further interest.

Whatever colour combinations you want to use, retaining a certain sense of subtlety is key, as you don’t want to overwhelm your bathroom or kitchen, or wherever else you’re decorating. Pink and gold go great together, for example, as do pink and green tones – you can mix it up with a feature wall in a different colour to the main tiles in the room or add pops of colour with a differently tiled shower area or a feature alcove by the bath.
