Get the look: Micro tile trend

Hidden in amongst this year’s interior design trends, the micro tile movement is one which is becoming increasingly popular with homeowners. With this in mind we’ve subsequently come up with some ideas of how you can incorporate this trend into your bathroom and beyond.

Whether you like pops of colour or more muted tones – interesting shapes or more standard rectangular tiles – when it comes to tiny tiles, there’s something to suit all preferences.

Read to the end of the blog to find out what we recommend if you want to get the look and join the micro tile trend …

Micro tiles are a popular look with homeowners.

What are micro tiles?

Micro tiles are simply small-format tiles – and they can be used to great effect to create feature areas within a room, such as with splash-backs or statement walls. You can, of course, also tile a full floor or multiple walls with micro tiles, depending on the look you want to achieve and your personal style preferences.

Smaller, micro tiles are also often available in quirkier shapes, such as triangular, hexagonal, square (chequerboard style) and scallop or shell-shaped tiles. You can also get piano tiles, micro metro and micro mosaic tiles, so there’s lots of choice if you want to go small.

While micro tiles will require more grouting than larger format tiles, if you want to create a visually interesting space and add texture to your bathroom or elsewhere, then it’s worth the extra cleaning. Delivering more detail, micro tiles draw the eye and could be an inspired choice for your next renovation.

Piano tiles

Combining the piano and micro mosaic styles, the Piano Grey Mosaic Sheet has a gloss finish and a light grey tone with speckled detailing which will go well with a wide range of décor. This slimline rectangular tile has, as the name suggests, the look of piano keys and creates an eye-catching effect when laid – a striking aesthetic which will add character and a modern look to your interior.

The Piano White Mosaic Sheet, meanwhile, has the same style but in a classic gloss white finish, if you prefer something which combines a more traditional aesthetic with the modern micro design.

Sculpted shell-shaped tiling

The tiles of the Atlantic Blue Mosaic Sheet have soft, scalloped edges.

Another interesting micro style is that of the scalloped tile, defined by smooth organic curves which deliver a softer look and evoke ocean vibes. For example, the Atlantis Blue Mosaic Sheet has scalloped edges which are reminiscent of fish scales and, together with their deep blue tone and gloss finish, have a distinctive look which will bring seaside calm to your bathroom.

The overlapping design of these tiles, combined with the curved edges, creates an organic aesthetic and are ideal for using on a feature wall or splash-back. They’re also a great wall tile for showers and are highly durable, so are perfect for using in busy bathrooms. Whether you want to lay them with the curved edge facing downwards, as pictured, or with the curve to the top, you can style these in various ways, according to personal preference.

Hexagonal micro tiles

If quirky shapes are what you like, then there are some great hexagonal micro tiles which will bring visual interest and texture to your bathroom. The Hex Frisia Silver Non-slip Mosaic Sheet mixes together micro navy, turquoise and silver tiles to create a layered look which draws the eye across the mosaic sheet. These small hexagonal tiles add interest both with their shape and colour, while the matt finish gives them a contemporary aesthetic.

The Penny Natureglass Turquoise Matte Non-slip Mosaic Sheet has a bold look.

Another hexagonal micro tile is the Penny Natureglass Turquoise Matte Non-slip Mosaic Sheet, a bold blue design which looks great contrasted with brushed brass bathroom-ware. If you prefer to use a single block colour then this is ideal, with the blue tone helping to create that calming ambience while the shape and size of the tiles adds visual interest and creates an eye-catching look.

The Penny Natureglass Tiles are another great choice for splash-backs or feature area and are robust tiles made from strong glass which will last long into the future.

If green is more your style, however, then the Mykonos Emerald Mosaic Sheet is another striking hexagonal tile with a gloss finish which will bring similar appeal to your bathroom.

With a rich green tone which varies in intensity across the tiles, the design also features a subtle brush-stroke effect which adds depth and texture. Again, this tone is evocative of nature and will help to cultivate a calming ambience in your room.

Penny-shaped micro tiling

Another distinctive micro tile style is the penny-shaped design, as seen in the Penny Arrecife Iridis Grey Mosaic Sheet. This enigmatic mosaic tile features a mixture of navy, grey and silver in varying intensities, which creates an undulating effect across the sheet. The gloss finish of the tiles also gives them a subtle shine in the light, creating an eye-catching aesthetic.

The small circular shape of the tiles also creates texture and depth, while their overall tone will complement a range of décor, making them very versatile.

Arrow-shaped micro tiles

Our final example of modern micro tiling is from the Delta range, with both the Delta Gold and Delta Copper Mosaic Sheets featuring a quirky arrow-shaped design. This popular tile incorporates striking metallic detailing, which adds to the overall attention-grabbing effect, with gold and brass used respectively in the two styles. These complement the dominant pale gold tone of the sheets, which are also interspersed with plain white tiles. All of this, together with the subtle sheen of the tiles, makes these an inspired choice if you want to make a statement with your walls.
